Pekka - The Mathematician's Air Display (1977)

Un disco de colaboración entre el bajista Pekka Pohjola y sus amigos Mike y Sally Oldfield. Como anécdota, se llamó en un principio "Keesojen Lehto" para su pais de origen (Finlandia) y también se publicó con otros títulos, como el referido aquí según la edición para el sello Virgin (1977), e incluso como "The Consequences Of Indecisions". En la lista siguiente tenéis la relación de las distintas ediciones de este peculiar disco que mezcla jazz con toques de fusión y rock progresivo.

El instrumento de Pekka Pohjola es el bajo y con éste, ya se ha ganado un respetable espacio en la consideración musical europea y alrededor del mundo entero.

No se trata de un artista popular, es más bien de corte subterráneo, y para conocer su obra no hay que sufrirla demasiado; es un músico que toma el asunto de la composición con calma. Desde que inició sus producciones allá en 1972, ha sacado 16 álbumes y algunos de ellos son, o compilación o grabación de algún concierto. 16 discos en 33 años no parecen ser producto de un artista muy prolífico, pero si uno escucha la calidad de su obra podrá estar satisfecho del tiempo invertido allí. Su obra también evoluciona con el paso del tiempo. Su calidad compositiva está más allá de los géneros musicales, aunque es más apreciada por amantes del rock progresivo, del jazz rock y la fusión. En la página Rockadillo mencionan que hasta el DJ Shadow –con una música totalmente diferente–, ha usado música de Pekka para hacer sus mezclas.

Pekka POHJOLA estudió piano clásico y violín en la Academia Sibelius de Helsinki, pero sus inclinaciones derivaron hacia la música rock. Incursionó en un grupo llamado THE BOYS –una banda que supuestamente era comparable a los JOHN MAYALL'S BLUESBREAKERS– y en 1970 se unió a Wigwam, una de las bandas más influyentes de la década en Finlandia, pero también un grupo de culto en la Gran Bretaña, permaneciendo junto a ellos durante un periodo de cuatro años. Cuando decidió iniciar su trayectoria musical como solista, realizó muchos trabajos de estudio pero también interpretó un tiempo junto a JUKKA TOLONEN BAND y junto a MADE IN SWEDEN también. En 1977 Pekka formó THE GROUP, grabando un disco epónimo ese mismo año pero más importante que eso, realizó su primer álbum como solista: "Pihkasilmä Kaarnakorva" durante su tiempo junto a WIGWAM.

A collaboration album between bassist Pekka Pohjola and his friends Mike & Sally Oldfield. Originally published as "Keesojen Lehto". this jazzy prog-rock fusion album has appeared in different labels with different titles. The following list shows them.

After having been relatively pleased with the results of Harakka Biailapokku (B the Magpie), Virgin Records decided to get Wigwam bassist Pekka Pohjola to record another solo album for them, and this time teamed him up with Mike Oldfield. Musically, Keesojen Lehto was entirely written by Pohjola, but Oldfield both plays guitar and co-produces, leaving his own distinct mark. There is also help from Sally Oldfield, and members of the band Made in Sweden.

The style of composition is very much the same as on Harakka Biailapokku, based around Pohjola's love of chord sequences. The repetition of longish chord sequences gradually building up to a crescendo is a style used by both Pohjola and Oldfield, and it is developed to its fullest potential on "Matemaatikon Lentonäyatös," the album's masterpiece. Based around two relatively simple, snaking tunes, this song catches two artists doing what they do best to create a genuine musical synergy.

Keesojen Lehto lasts less than thirty five minutes and contains only five tracks. The longest of these tracks, which apparently translates as "The Consequences of Head Bending," is possibly the weakest, and seems to lose direction in a couple of places. It still has enough redeeming qualities, however, to make it a worthwhile song overall. The album also relies heavily on repetition, which seems to work quite often, but can show up some of the weaker pieces of music.

Criticisms aside, this is a very good album, and a very good entry to Pekka Pohjola's work for Oldfield fans. Although Pekka Pohjola apparently said later that too much of Mike Oldfield's sound got carried across, I personally disagree, and think that the two of them make a very strong team. It's a shame that they never worked in the studio again, but this album is a rewarding legacy of what they managed to achieve that one time.
