David Bedford - Rigel 9 (1985)

Besides "The Odyssey", this album here is the one among Bedford's output that comes the closest to actual progressive rock. Stylistically, it is quite similar to the aforementioned album; the orchestral section seems to be larger this time around, and there are even a few actual songs, one of which features a conventional rock instrumentation (more on those later). The album also isn't tranquil throughout like "The Odyssey", there are a few quite dramatic sections to be found here. Bedford's synthesizers (and other keyboard instruments) are again featured heavily throughout.

The album can be described as a kind of radio play with music. The story, written by reknowned science fiction author Ursula Le Guin exclusively (as far as I'm aware) for this album, is quite intriguing. In short, three scientists explore an uncharted planet. At first they can find no signs of intelligent life, but eventually they encounter a group of aliens. One of the scientists is captured by the aliens and taken to their city. This is seen as an act of hostility by the other two, and a subsequent encounter between them ends violently. The aliens however turn out to be peaceful and well-meaning, and the third scientist is fascinated by the beauty of their city and the harmonious lifestyle of the aliens. He eventually returns to the ship, only to be told by the others that the ship's instruments have mapped the whole continent, and there are no cities. There's nothing on this planet. Rigel 9 was "a waste of time". He tries unsuccessfully to convince the others of the existence of the city; eventually the crew sets off in the ship, and it is implied that no one will ever know about the beauty the third scientist encountered on this planet because the rest of the crew just do not believe his story, assuming the aliens "did something to his mind".

The music is again a mix of synthesizers and orchestral arrangements; the voices of the aliens are represented by beautiful choral parts which are indeed "alien-sounding". All of the instrumental music on this disc sets the mood for the story very well, alternating between atmospheric and dramatic. The songs, on the other hand, don't do much for me. I wouldn't really describe them as prog songs, they sound more like something out of a musical. One of them is a bona fide rock song, complete with drums and even saxophone; the others feature the usual mix of orchestra and synthesizers. There are however only three of them, and they don't really take away from the overall experience. It's not like they're downright bad, but I wouldn't exactly miss them if they were gone.

For a 1985 recording, this is really surprisingly seventies-sounding. There's nothing on this disc that suggests it dates from the mid-eighties. All in all, like "The Odyssey", this is an unusal yet ultimately very rewarding album. I doubt anything similar exists anywhere, so if you're in for a unique experience, you'd do well to give this a try.

David Bedford - Great Equatorial (1994)

Rockorquesta - Tubular Bells concert (1998)

Alien prequel is not a rumour

In April it was revealed that director Ridley Scott is “toying around with the idea” of doing a Alien prequel or reboot. Bloody Disgusting’s sources claim that Michael Costigan, Ridley Scott and even Tony Scott are all on board to produce a new film in the Alien series, with commercial/music video director Carl Erik Rinsch at the helm. Rinsch is also a member of Ridley Scott’s production company RSA. No details about the plot or timeline (we’ve heard the words “reboot” and “prequel”), but apparently the plan is to return to the original idea of one alien on one spaceship.

I have compiled some of Rinsch’s more impressive commercials in another post called The Commercials of Carl Erik Rinsch. You must check out his work. Watching his commercials, it’s easy to see why he might be a choice for a 21st Century Alien film. He is able to effectively combine realistic visual effects with live action imagery to create a magically compelling story.

Sigourney Weaver has publicly expressed interest in doing a sequel, but it wouldn’t make sense to include her character in an origin story. But who knows, maybe Ridley is “toying” with some kind of reboot/prequel combo.

Tubular Bells rings again (Today's events)

This video has been already submitted during today's celebrations around the world for the incoming rerelease of Mike Oldfield's Tubular Bells next monday. It happened at Sydney town, Australia, and seems to be very simple (at last, to be stand-offish, noddy). I wonder what other cities have done in the meantime, but that means to me now unsignificant.

In London. another event, running up now from 2pm till 6pm, and possibly in other parts are just celebrating this so much cloying happening.

Concerning London event, an user who assisted to British Music Experience at the O2 today and after meeting one Mercury Records PA commented: There will be further expanded re-releases starting with Hergest Ridge and Ommadawn before the end of the year. Then after that hopefully Incantations and a box-set of all the concerts recorded during the Exposed tour.

No mention of a Boxed-box or orchestral Hergest Ridge but I did really get the impression that they know we would like everything in the vaults please and are trying to gather as much as possible and just release it. How far they go through the back catalogue rather depends on sales of the early re-releases.

Mike is apparently really enthusiastic about the response to the re-release project and seems quite up for doing more of them, but it seems unlikely that he’s going to be recording anything new any time soon.

Thought that all might be of some interest.

However, all what I'm overlooking this reintroduction of TB tomorrow in the shops, is a trend to make cash above all, in spite of new mixes. Good luck to buyers, because this year will have the chance to get the first three Mike Oldfield masterworks completely remixed, except if overwhelmed of him.

And one last thing, Much Ado About Nothing. These particular events had no relevance for anyone. So, who cares?

Norah Jones - Feels Like Home (2004)

Norah Jones blew everybody away with her jazzy, country-tinged, Grammy-winning debut CD, Come Away with Me. On this recording, Jones doesn't mess with her trademark formula.

Under Arif Mardin's cozy coproduction, Jones is supported by her writing partners, her Handsome Band, and some special guests (country legend Dolly Parton, Levon Helm and Garth Hudson of the Band, and jazz drummer Brian Blade, to name a few). Jones's Texas-twanged vocals and her sparse acoustic and electric Wurlitzer piano lines enliven the CD's 13 tracks, from the light and lively single "Sunrise" to Tom Waits's "The Long Way Home" and the bouncy duet with Parton, "Creepin' In."

Jones's soul-baring piano/vocal rendition of Duke Ellington's "Melancholia," retitled "Don't Miss You at All," proves she's a true Blue Note artist with unlimited potential. --Eugene Holley Jr (Amazon)
