Un video del concierto de la versión orquestal de "Hergest Ridge" sale a la luz

Es toda una sorpresa y de las grandes. Lo he visto circular en algunos grupos en Facebook sobre Mike Oldfield y me he ido a la página de YouTube donde está alojado para verlo con más detenimiento. Es un video mostrando parte de uno de los pocos conciertos que se hicieron de la versión orquestal del álbum "Hergest Ridge" de Mike Oldfield, con la dirección del músico David Bedford, quien hizo los arreglos orquestales al igual que hiciera con "Tubular Bells", publicándose en 1975 por Virgin Records, siendo considerado un disco más en la discografía de Mike, aunque él tuviera sus reparos con dichos arreglos, aun habiendo participado en su grabación.

Es pronto para aventurar a cuáles de los conciertos pertenece esta grabación que, teniendo en cuenta el video cronómetro en pantalla, estaba en proceso de edición y ser emitido después por uno de los canales de la televisión británica, o tal vez se había grabado con vistas a su posible publicación en cinta de video doméstico (todo es mera especulación). Como dato a apuntar a la descripción de este descubrimiento, toda la pieza que contemplamos aquí forma parte de la primera parte del álbum de Oldfield y no hay ningún guitarrista solista como esperaba en un primer momento; tras los compases iniciales de la obra, se observa que no es así y se palpa enseguida que estamos ante una grabación única.

En ciertas ocasiones, era Steve Hillage o Andy Summers el artista elegido para interpretar las partes con la guitarra eléctrica, dado que Oldfield era totalmente reacio a comparecer en público y delante de una gran orquesta después de su experiencia grabando sus guitarras para "The Orchestral Tubular Bells", una historia que muchos fans conocen al dedillo, pero no está de más refrescaros un poco la memoria, pero no con mis propias palabras, ya que no soy tan detallista como otros ni tengo tantos datos sobre Mike como a mí me gustaría.

Contaba José Cantos en su biografía sobre Mike Oldfield (Editorial Rock Pop Cátedra, 1996):

"David Bedford realizó unos arreglos para orquesta de los dos discos de Oldfield, y ambos se representaron con bastante éxito en el Royal Albert Hall londinense el 9 de diciembre, dirigiendo el propio Bedford la Royal Philharmonic Orchestra y se suponía que con Mike Oldfield a la guitarra, pero tuvo que ser sustituido a última hora por Steve Hillage (con el consiguiente disgusto del público, que se lanzó a la compra de las entradas al enterarse de la actuación), luego sabremos por qué. (...)

Mike llegó a declarar en su día que no le entusiasmaba el proyecto, que tenía sus reparos y que no le había sonado del todo bien, pues él hubiera preferido no tocar y tener un mayor control sobre la totalidad; de nuevo no sería Mike el que tocara la guitarra en la serie de conciertos que se realizaron por Inglaterra y Escocia, sino que fueron respectivamente un posterior miembro de Police, Andy Summers, y Steve Hillage, que ya tocó en la premiere de Tubular Bells, ahora con la Orquesta Nacional de Escocia. (...)

Se esperaba un mayor éxito de The Orchestral Tubular Bells, así que al final a The Orchestral Hergest Ridge no se le concedió su oportunidad, una pena ya que tiene una mayor calidad, expresividad y dinamismo, quizás porque Hergest Ridge se prestaba más a orquestación que el caótico Tubular Bells."

Solo queda, por tanto, disfrutar de este trozo de uno de los conciertos realizados.

JT Bruce - Universica (2009)

El último trabajo hasta la fecha de JT Bruce, de quien he comentado otro de sus discos, es este "Universica", en clave sinfónico-progresivo y con un trasfondo más cercano a la ciencia-ficción o la astronomía, pero sin dejar de lado los orígenes del grupo en su cercanía con el 'metal-rock', tan pronto como leáis con atención los créditos del disco y este comentario alusivo al mismo:

Universica represents a departure from the stylistic boundaries set up by JT Bruce's previous releases. The music retains a progressive sensibility while striving to create textures and ambiance that are truly unique. Each song bears the name of a star, evoking feelings of a journey through the cosmos.

The focus was on developing a thick atmosphere and very moody, emotional compositions. The use of dirty distortion and intentionally lo-fi sounds lends an almost industrial element to some of the tracks, whereas the extensive layering of synthetic and organic sounds gives an ethereal and space-like feel to other parts. There is a greater electronic presence in this album, used to thicken the mix and create a wall of evolving sound.

Por su conceptualización y la temática del disco, se le puede comparar con grupos como Ayreon, The Tangent o Flower Kings, varios de los grandes grupos de hoy que hacen que el rock progresivo siga más vivo que nunca.

Michael Nyman - The Piano Concerto / Where The Bee Dances (1998)

Celebrated for his modular, repetitive style, minimalist composer Michael Nyman was among experimental music's most high-profile proponents, best known in connection with his film scores for director Peter Greenaway. Born in London on March 23, 1944, he studied at the Royal Academy of Music and King's College, London, under communist composer Alan Bush and Thurston Dart, a musicologist specializing in the English Baroque. Under Dart's tutelage, Nyman was introduced to 16th- and 17th-century English rounds and canons, their repetitive, contrapuntal lines highly influencing his own later work; Dart also encouraged him to travel to Romania in the interest of seeking out the country's native folk music traditions. Upon graduating during the mid-'60s, Nyman found himself disconnected from both the pop music of the times and the school of modern composition heralded by Stockhausen; as a result, from 1964 to 1976, he worked not as a composer but as a music critic, writing for publications including The Listener, New Statesman, and The Spectator. In a review of British composer Cornelius Cardew, he first introduced the word "minimalism" as a means of musical description.

During this same period, Nyman did continue performing, appearing with artists ranging from the Scratch Orchestra and Portsmouth Sinfonia to Steve Reich and the Flying Lizards. In 1974, he wrote the influential book Experimental Music -- Cage and Beyond, an exploration of the influence of John Cage on a generation of composers and performers. Perhaps its most profound impact was on Nyman himself, who through writing the book seemed to discover his own muse; in 1976 he accepted an invitation from Harrison Birtwistle, Director of Music at the National Theatre, to arrange a number of 18th-century Venetian popular songs for a production of Goldoni's Il Campiello. Nyman's arrangements consisted of medieval instruments -- rebecs, sackbuts and shawms, bass drums, soprano saxophones, and the like -- designed for maximum loudness to produce a distinctive instrumental color; when the production ended, he began composing original music merely to keep the same group of musicians together. Originally an acoustic unit, when rechristened the Michael Nyman Band in the early '80s, amplification became essential to their aesthetic.

Nyman's first major success came in 1982 with the score to the Greenaway film The Draughtsman's Contract; his subsequent collaborations with Greenaway on pictures including 1988's Drowning By Numbers, 1989's The Cook, the Thief, His Wife and Her Lover, and 1991's Prospero's Books remain among his most high-profile works, their notoriety coming at the risk of overshadowing his forays into opera, chamber music, vocal music, and dance scores. The signatures of Nyman's work include not only his use of propulsive repetition, but also a palette of idiosyncratic instrumental touches -- thumping keyboards, "rude" bass clarinets, and baritone saxophones, and extreme high and low octave doublings. Mozart was a central influence in much of his work, including 1976's In Re Don Giovanni and 1983's I'll Stake My Cremona to a Jew's Trump; Schumann, meanwhile, was the major inspiration behind the acclaimed 1986 chamber opera The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat, while Bartok shades 1988's String Quartet No. 2, commissioned for the Indian dancer and choreographer Shobana Jeyasingh.

In 1990, Nyman composed Six Celan Songs, a work based on the poems of Paul Celan, for the German cabaret singer Ute Lemper, with whom he first worked on the score for Prospero's Books. His most emotional compositions to date, they served as the clear impetus for his score to Jane Campion's 1992 film The Piano, easily Nyman's best-known work; like so many of his compositions, he obsessively reworked the music to The Piano time and time again, the haunting melodies reappearing arranged for standard piano concerto, for two pianos, for chamber ensemble, for soprano saxophone and strings (Lost and Found), and for soprano and string quartet (The Piano Sings). While 1992's The Upside-Down Violin reflected Nyman's continuing fascination with traditional ethnic musics, 1993's MGV, or Musique a Grande Vitesse, returned to the propulsive sounds of the Michael Nyman Band. Other major works include 1992's Time Will Pronounce, 1993's Yamamoto Perpetuo (a composition for unaccompanied violin written for Alexander Balanescu), 1994's solo harpsichord work Tango for Tim, and 1995's String Quartet No. 4. Michael Nyman - The Piano Concerto Y Otros Temas (1995)

Michael Nyman escribió para las notas interiores de este CD lo siguiente:

"El artículo definido del título está lleno de intención: este concierto, para piano y pequeña orquesta, está enteramente construido sobre un material extraido de la banda sonora de la película de Jane Campion, "El Piano". Escribí la música de esta película en dos fases: la música de piano, para Holly Hunter (que en el film interpreta el papel de la pianista Ada) en otoño de 1991; y la partitura orquestal, basada en parte en la música de piano, después de haber terminado la película en verano de 1992. The Piano Concerto, encargado por el Festival de Lille, se còmpuso en primavera de 1993 y fue interpretado por Kathryn Stott con la Orquesta Nacional de Lille, dirigida por Jean-Claude Casadesus el 26 de septiembre de 1993, junto con MGV (Musique á Grande Vitesse).

El 'reexamen' de la música de la película me ha permitido alcanzar tres objetivos (por lo menos): crear una estructura más coherente a partir de frases del film independientes y a menudo breves, construir texturas dinámicas más refinadas de las que exigía la película (con un grupo restringido de cuerdas y saxofones), y escribir una partitura de piano de mayor complejidad que la que le convenía a El Piano.

El Concierto es una obra en un solo movimiento con cuatro fases distintas, de las que tres contienen aires populares escoceses de los siglos XVIII y XIX en las que se basaba la música de Ada en la película. El de la primera fase (la playa), en La Menor, deriva esencialmente del tema escocés "Benny Winter's Noo Awa"."
