Vicky El Vikingo

Michael Nyman - The Piano Concerto Y Otros Temas (1995)

Machiavel - Jester (1977)

I'm surprised that this fine Belgian progrock band has so few reviews on this site, perhaps they sound too accessible? Especially their second and third album are an excellent addition to any collection, later their sound turned into more commercial and poppy. This second album is 'second best' after their magnum opus "Mechanical moonbeams".

On the first side the first two tracks "Wisdom" and "Sparkling jaw" contain mostly a slow rhtyhm with some breaks and accellarations and wonderful colouring from the keyboards (string-ensemble, spectacular Minimoog runs and Fender Rhodes electric piano), strong English vocals and great guitarplay (from sensitive to fiery). The third song "Moments" has a pleasant romantic atmosphere featuring warm vocals, twanging acoustic guitar and wonderful choir-Mellotron. The final composition on side one starts with a mellow keyboard intro, then halfway flowing shifting moods delivering great work on the choir-Mellotron, Minimoog and Fender Rhodes piano along good vocals.

On side two first two tasteful and alternating tracks entitled "Jester" and "Mister street fair", both with wonderful changing climates, surprising breaks, varied keyboard (majestic choir-Mellotron waves) work and strong vocals. This album ends with the long composition "Rock, sea and tree" that alternates between mellow and swinging featuring fine interplay between a dynamic rhythm-section, vocals and piano. Halfway we can enjoy a sensitive electric guitar solo, then a gradually more bombastic atmosphere with a propulsive rhythm-section and a sensational Minimoog solo.

IF YOU LIKE HARMONIC AND MELODIC PROG WITH VARIED KEYBOARDS, THIS ONE IS YOURS!

Interactivo – Goza Pepillo (2004)

Recomendable.

Karmakanic - Wheel Of Life (2004)

The first album of the Jonas Reingold project excelled in originality, musical talent, strong compositions and a very strong vocalist. And after a first listening to the new album, the same quality pops up. "Wheel Of Life" has a more progressive tendency and leans more towards the music of The FLOWER KINGS, YES and TRANSATLANTIC. The debute album maybe contained somewhat more catchy songs and is a bit more accessible, but from a pure musical angle this "Wheel of Life" may be even a bit better.

"Masterplan Part I" is one of these typical epic progtracks from TFK, although the somewhat heavier approach from Reingold and the charismatic voice of Edman lift the track to an extra dimension. The melodic passages are linked seamlessly to the more aggressive parts, until now, I don't know any other band who gets this done in this subtle way. For this track, Jonas called on Richard Anderson, keyboard wizard and brain behind TIME REQUIEM. The resulting duels with Krister Jonsson are phenomenal. By the way, during the heavier parts, you can perceive a touch of DREAM THEATER.

A baby voice introduces a track with a typical Yes sound, bass parts and vocal harmonics included. "Alex in Paradise" (after Jonas' son) sounds very cheerful and contains a very light, jazzy guitar solo.

On "At The Speed Of Light", you get to hear, for the first time, the characteristic bass sound of Jonas and as on the debute album, I once again get that 'Gino Vannelli' feeling, I wonder if Goran Edman realizes it. The new guitar player Krister Jonsson certainly is an asset, altough he has a less proggy style than Roine Stolt, but his solos à la Holdsworth are awesome. This track again exhales TFK, not in the least due to the contributions of Tomas Bodin.

After the question "Excuse me. Do U Tango?" asked by a female computer voice, follows the most bizar and at the same time the most original track, that I heard during the last years. After this you get a bright piece of fusion, followed by swelling bass parts in a tango rhythm, accompanied by a counting dance teacher. The rhythm speeds up in a compelling latino american atmosphere with a compulsory acoustic guitar solo. The changes in tempo are really innumerable during this track and Jonas gets the chance to enjoy himself completely. And let's not forget the whirling and technical refined drums by virtuoso Zoltan!

"Where Earth Meets The Sky" follows the trend of "Masterplan", the better neoprog with again some enormous examples of musical talent, even alternated with romantic sounding passages in the style of classic rock ballads. KARMAKANIC knows how to get such a track to a higher level, especially with the help of a few 'jazzy' solos on the keyboards.

The shortest track (still 5 minutes) "Hindby" reveals a fantastic bluesy guitar solo full of emotion from Jonsson, with a reference to the early (and also the best) Satriani period.

The title track "Wheel of Life" opens very cheerful with a flute, so it's no coincidence it reminds a bit of JETHRO TULL, covered in a KARMAKANIC dress. The striking difference with the previous album is the frequent use of polyphonic voice parts. In the middle part you get a very pleasing, even psychedelic passage (PINK FLOYD), carried by a compelling guitar by Roine Stolt. It's amazing how the compositions are strongly put together, the complete musical and vocal spectrum passes the review.

"Masterplan Part 2" isn't really the sequel of the first track, although there are some subtle simularities. Once again, the vocals of Goran Edman are great and full of emotion and with a brilliant guitar solo from friend Roine this track puts a pedal point to an album which I, for the time being, declare as the best of 2004. As always, there are a lot of references to the past and present, but KARMAKANIC, and especially Jonas Reingold, combines all these influences to a highly original collection of pure epics. I don't mind waiting another two year for the next album, if it means the quality remains the same. Do I need to mention it... every prog fan must have this album in his collection!

Some Mike Oldfield playbacks

Possibly screened on 1986 at a German TV channel, maybe during "Pictures In The Dark" single promotion, Mike Oldfield and his then wife Anita Hegerland "performed" "Arrival" and "Pictures In The Dark". A sense of humour invaded final act of the program, while Mike Oldfield watched the scene between indifference and irresolution.

The following one is quite amusing, if you see Anita rushing quickly to the microphone to "sing" within the playback of the same song in another TV show in the same year.

However, this is not a proper playback indeed and looking Mike hair style, this has been recorded in 1989, as part of "Earth Moving" promotion. Anita can sing!!

Karmakanic - Entering The Spectra (2002)

KARMAKANIC is a side project of THE FLOWER KINGS with the involvement of the complete TFK line-up as already explained well in the biography. However although they are the same musicians I would disagree to the quite common opinion that their music sound almost the same like FK's. At least if one substracts 2 tracks on this albums, one of them being a TFK composition anyway (#7), the other is the very long epic title song, which is in fact the hightlight of the album. Of course Roine's voice sounds like Roine, whether he sings in TFK, KARMAKANIC or THE TANGENT. One main difference compared to TFK is that Karmakanic's music is less intricate (at least compared to Unfold The Future having fewer symphonic elements in general and is heavier, sometimes tending even towards Hardrock/Metal.

Okay let's try a track by track review: The Little Man represents the introduction of the album's theme which is the story of "the tiny little man with an ordinary life", who would like to be something special and is escaping for this reason into internet cyberspace. No.2, the title song is like mentioned above very much TFK-alike and consists in the typical TFK manner of several parts in quite different styles like heavy rock, more mellow music and jazz-rock fusion. Very diverse and definitely the best one.

The Spirit Remains the Same is quite reminiscent of POS, although Daniel Gildenlöw is not involved here. The whole song sounds very dark with vocals of ex-RISING FORCEsinger Göran Edman and inclusion of an aboriginal vocal sample. For sure not very much TFK-typical. No. 4's title Cyberdust From Mars fits perfectly to the music, starting with a deep breathing and being a very spacy, a bit weird and quite heavy song with vocals performed by Roine that sound here differently than usually.

Apart of his voice this song has as well little resemblance with TFK. Space Race No.3 is a very Metal-alike one with Göran Edman singing. In fact this music style should not be that surprising for a band led by Jonas Reingold, knowing something about his (and Zoltan Csörsz') numerous appearances in Melodic/Neoclassical bands like TIME REQUIEM, SPACE ODYSSEY or OPUS ATLANTICA, mainly together with MAJESTIC-keyboarder Richard Andersson.

Although this kind of music is quite nice to listen IMO, it's probably not regarded as essential and interesting by Progheads. Next track The Man In The Moon is the weakest one of the album I would say, although being not really bad. Actually a quite common AOR rock song with Edman singing once again. It's leading without any break over to No. 7 One whole half, which was already relased on the Rainmaker album bonus disc. This version sounds a bit different and quite interesting containing an brilliant solo by Jonas. A rather hectic, fast and heavy song. EXCELLENT!

No. 8 Is this the end? is starting very mellow in a psychedelic vein, and develops over some choral singing finally to an almost QUEEN-alike arena rock (or Power Metal) hymn. This song sounds as well not much TFK-alike, but still a very good one. Then Jonas is presenting us a short fretless version of Bach's Cello Suite No.1 played in an incredible speed and his bass play is leading over to the last track Welcome To Paradise, a quite fast and more heavy song with Jonas and Göran Edman singing together. The lyrics are very ironic and despite of the title it sounds sometimes more like an invitation to hell. In some parts this song could also be a TFK one, but with its heavy rock impact it still sounds differently. A very good one again.

King Crimson - Live at Plymouth Guildhall (1971)

Live at Plymouth Guildhall is a live album (2CD set) by the band King Crimson, released through the King Crimson Collectors' Club in January 2001. The album was recorded at the Guildhall in Plymouth, UK on May 11, 1971.

This concert was the fifth ever live performance by the Islands version of King Crimson. The CD release was adapted from the original soundboard tape, mixed by Peter Sinfield. An audience bootleg was added to repair the missing introduction to "Get Thy Bearings".

The liner notes were written by drummer Ian Wallace. Referring to his drum part in "Sailor's Tale", Wallace writes, "I really like what I'm doing, so much so, that I might have to steal it back from myself!"

The present edition I choose for you doesn't include "Mars" as it's a single CD release and on back tray is also not mentioned.

Änglagård - Hybris (1992)

We all know the story of how progressive rock crashed at the peak of its wave in the mid seventies when monstrosities such as Tales From Topographic Oceans confounded and annoyed rock critics. With the exception of Pink Floyd, the "big six" either ventured into more commercial realms or drifted into obscurity, and most of the lesser bands did both. The neo-prog revival was seen by many as a pale ghost, led by bands who mistook stringing three five-minute songs together for structural complexity. That is why Änglagård's debut created such a stir. This is an album that genuinely takes off where Close to the Edge leaves off.

Änglagård manage to walk that fine line in drawing inspiration from the seventies without ever being derivative. There are definitely passages reminiscent of early Genesis or King Crimson, but these are superficial, and for the most part Änglagård pursue their own formula. The sound is brooding, with dissonance being a regular feature. The music still manages to captivate the listener, and some sections are nothing short of magnificent.

Having praised this album to the heavens thus far, it is now beholden to me to explain why I would not rate this album in my own personal top twenty. This is a little tricky to do, as there's not that much wrong with this album. It certainly grabs my attention, but it has trouble holding it. Each song is probably several minutes too long, and the song structure isn't as effective as it might be in working its way to a climax.

Personal taste aside, this album has a vast amount to recommend it. Each listening provides deeper appreciation and the rewards are worthwhile. It should probably be played loud to fully appreciate its dynamic range, not to mention its power. An essential album? Definitely, even if it doesn't end up being your favourite either.

http://www.bellybeats.com/images/www.paypal.es/

Ray Charles - A Message To The People (1972, ABC Records)

It was 1972, the turbulent ‘60s were winding down, and the music world was about to fork off in several directions: the soft rock of James Taylor and Carole King, the outlaw country of Waylon and Willie and soon . . . Disco.

America was on people’s minds: Don McLean with “American Pie” and there was even a band named America. Our nation was at war in Vietnam; we had landed on the moon. African-Americans were emboldened and encouraged by the progress they were achieving. The album A Message From the People, produced by Ray and recorded at his RPM International Studio, contained a song that did not chart at the time, but went on to become one of his best loved recordings: “America the Beautiful”. He would perform it countless times on TV and in live concert for the rest of his life.

“Mr. Charles wanted A Message From the People to include 'America the Beautiful' because of his tremendous love for our country,” stated Valerie Ervin, President of the Ray Charles Foundation. “Throughout his career he performed 'America' at a Super Bowl, a World Series game and for seven U.S. Presidents”, she added.

The songs Ray selected include “Lift Every Voice and Sing”, also known as the Black National Anthem; Dion DiMucci’s hit, “Abraham, Martin and John”; “Stevie Wonder’s plea for brotherly love, “Heaven Help Us All”; “John Denver’s loving ode to America’s heartland, “Take Me Home, Country Roads”; and Melanie’s “Look What They’ve Done To My Song, Ma,” which was also a hit single for Ray. Ray even came up with the idea for the album’s cover featuring the faces of Abe Lincoln, Dr. Martin Luther King and Jack and Bobby Kennedy, and commissioned artist Al Willis to bring it to fruition.

As of April 7, the entire post-1960 catalog of Ray Charles classic recordings became available for digital download for the first time ever. These are some of America’s most cherished and requested recordings by America’s greatest artist of the second half of the 20th century. Included are such iconic tracks as the #1 hits “Georgia on My Mind,” “Hit the Road Jack,” “One Mint Julep,” “I Can’t Stop Loving You,” “Unchain My Heart,” “You Are My Sunshine,” “Let’s Go Get Stoned,” as well as “Busted,” “You Don’t Know Me,” “Together Again,” and many more.

100.000 visits

After two years, my blog has reached 100,000 visits. That's nice indeed... I hope to double that score in less time. ;)

Whatever it makes this blog so different, since a few months ago, is the need to share music information with all of you and enjoy listening them and, if possible, support those artists in legal form. I'll continue posting music, of course, but no download will be possible except in some cases: public domain releases, bootlegs or uncathalogued releases (including vinyl LP oldies) and another sued reason.

It's being more difficult to include here anything you haven't seen or listened before in other music blogs, but I'll try to put records you haven't ever heard before with some extra info, taken from their respective liner notes or credits.
